It’s a Cat-Off in Latest Trailer for Musical Fantasy Film ‘Cats’

Musical Fantasy Film

Check out the latest trailer for the upcoming musical fantasy film Cats, featuring a whos-who of film and music talent and directed by Tom Hooper.

In the musical fantasy film, Cats, a tribe of cats known as Jellicles compete against each other through song and dance, to find out which one is worthy to make to the ‘Heaviside Layer’, and upon their return come back to a new life.

The film is based on the hugely successful stage musical of the same by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which itself was based on the 1939 poetry collection Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by author T. S. Eliot.

I haven’t seen the stage musical so I’m not too privy on the film’s finer plot details, though there does appear to be some profound themes like adversity, survival and rebirth (the Heaviside Layer being a metaphor for rebirth), amongst others I’m sure.

This new trailer doesn’t feature much music from the film (check out the first trailer here for that), though we get a nice look at the concept and the characters.

If this is your first time viewing the trailer for Cats, you also won’t be able to miss the super-creepy designs of the human-cat hybrid characters.

It’s funny though, I was weirded out by the designs after seeing the first trailer but after seeing this second one, I feel more comfortable with them.

This is, after all, a fantasy film (I’m sure these cat creatures may still haunt some people, however).

James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift and Rebel Wilson star in the film, along with newcomer Francesca Hayward.

It’s directed by Academy Award-winner Tom Hooper, whose past credits include The Danish Girl (2015), Les Misérables (2012) and The King’s Speech (2010).

See it in cinemas from 26 December 2019.
