Mildly Creepy Trailer for Stage Musical Film Adaptation of ‘Cats’

stage musical movies

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s world-famous stage musical Cats has received a film adaptation with an all-star cast and features an awkward mix of CGI and live-action.

The premise of the film is as follows:

Over the course of a single night, a tribe of cats called the Jellicles make what is known as “the Jellicle choice” and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.

I have no idea what that means as I haven’t seen the stage musical show and the film’s first trailer is as weird as that premise sounds.

The trailer showcases the film’s music and gives us a good look at the world director Tom Cooper and co. have created, as well as a close look at the titular characters and their weirdly unique designs.

The cat characters in this film all look like they have super-imposed faces on CGI-bodies combined with practical, furry bodysuits.

It’s hard to explain in words, though it does all feel a bit off.

Despite the awkward-looking characters and effects, the filmmakers should still be praised for going with this stylistic choice instead of playing it safe (whatever safe means in a world of singing human-hybrid cats).

And being a musical film, it could just work in the end.

Cats features an excellent cast that includes James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, and introducing Francesca Hayward in her feature film debut.

It arrives in theatres on 20 December 2019.
