Ex-Machina (2014) director Alex Garland’s latest film Annihilation is a mix of sci-fi and horror, starring the talented Natalie Portman.

The film is adapted from the 2015 award-winning novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer, and follows a biologist (Portman) who goes on an expedition to an environmental disaster zone, to figure out the peculiar alien-like biology of the place; a place where people have entered, but never returned.

Oscar Isaac plays Portman’s husband in the film, who luckily did make it out of the disaster zone, but in worse-for-wear conditions.

Annihilation looks to feature elements from several other popular films in the same genre, such as the Alien (1979-) films and more recently, Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival (2016).

The trailer sets the tone for the film as one full of mystery, horror and suspense, with some unique sci-fi elements.

Garland’s last film and debut feature, Ex Machina, was a fantastic addition to the artificial intelligence sub-genre of science-fiction, and judging by this new trailer, Annihilation is set to follow in its footsteps, adding to the environmental/biological/creature-feature sub-genre of sci-fi.

Joining Portman and Isaac in supporting roles are Jennifer Jason Leigh, Benedict Wong and Tessa Thompson.

The film hits cinemas on 23 February 2018.
