Spielberg’s ‘Ready Player One’ Gets its First Pop-Culture Rich Trailer

ready player one trailer

The highly anticipated trailer for Ready Player One has dropped, and it’s full of pop-culture references, along with an intriguing story.

In the near future, humans have taken to spending all of their free time in the digital universe known as the ‘Oasis’, where an individual can choose the form of an avatar and live out their fantasies, while daily life in the real world is filled with a slum-quality, dystopian style of living.

When the creator of the Oasis passes (Mark Rylance), he leaves behind a (literal) easter egg in the digital world, offering whoever finds it riches beyond belief, setting off a dangerous chain of events once the hunt for the egg begins.

The film is based on Ernest Cline’s popular 2011 book of the same name, and features themes that are relevant in today’s modern world.

Escapism to a virtual reality is not too far-fetched a concept in modern society, when you consider people’s obsession with living in the digital space and technological advances around augmented and virtual reality.

Fans of video games and pop-culture in general will be delighted to see the many references that can be found within this trailer.

The film looks like it will be a fun action-adventure romp with a message, and the art-direction features a mix of rich visual and practical effects.

Master director Steven Spielberg is at the helm here, and the subject matter and plot for this film look like a perfect fit for the director.

Up-and-coming star Tye Sheridan leads the cast, and he’s joined by Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Mark Rylance, Simon Pegg and T.J. Miller.

Ready Player One hits cinemas on 29 March 2018.
