John Boyega leads a new pack of Jaeger pilots against a swarm of Kaiju’s, threatening to destroy the planet in Pacific Rim Uprising.
For the uninitiated, Jaeger = Giant mechanical fighting robot, powered by human pilots.
Kaiju = Hellish gigantic monsters out to destroy things.
Pacific Rim Uprising features more of the same robot-on-monster battles, as we see a new breed of Jaeger pilots introduced into the battle.
Boyega plays Jake Pentecost, the son of the first film’s hero, Stacker Pentecost, played by Idris Elba.
When a new Kaiju threat appears, Jake and his team of young cadets join the fight against the monsters, while trying to figure out what brought them there.
The difference between this and Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 film Pacific Rim, seems to be that there is a human villain that’s brought the Kaiju’s back, as opposed to their random appearance in the first film.
Aside from that, we can expect a fairly similar plot to the first film, plus balls-to-the-wall action, which appears to have been upped a notch here.
Of course with films like these, you can never expect too much from the plot, so whether or not you will enjoy this film will largely come down to the spectacle.
And based on this latest trailer, it looks as though director Steven S. DeKnight and his team have put in their best effort in making Pacific Rim Uprising an entertaining big-screen experience.
We’ll find out when it hits cinemas on 22 March 2018.
