Ricky Gervais is back for another series of the hilariously somber Netflix series, After Life, and it features more of what fans came to love about the first season.
Gervais plays Tony, a small-town newspaper journalist who is suffering from a prolonged period of grief following the loss of his wife to cancer.
Mad at the world and those around him, Tony does not shy away from telling people how much he wants to end his own life, and generally walks around in a shroud of misery.
Over the course of season 1, we saw Tony attempt to overcome his grief with the help of the people in his life (though he didn’t make it easy for them).
While his outlook on life certainly improved, we can see from the new season 2 trailer that he still has a ways to go.
The new season of After Life sees Tony continue to work through his grief, except this time by being more courteous and helpful to those around him.
Ricky Gervais’ classic, snarky humor is ever-present in season 2 and he doesn’t hold back, yet again.
Fans of Gervais will be pleased to see more of the same output from the comedian, and newcomers to the serious can expect a surprisingly heartfelt, and devastating story, with glimmers of hope spread throughout.
After Life is, however, not a show for anyone that’s easily offended, but is nevertheless a rewarding watch.
Check it out on Netflix from 24 April 2020.
