Naomi Watts and Andrew Lincoln star in Penguin Bloom, an uplifting Australian film that showcases a family’s struggle against adversity.

Watts plays Sam Bloom, who after a near-fatal accident is left wheelchair-bound and unable to walk.

Her family, including husband Cameron (Lincoln) and her children struggle to cope with her disability, until an injured magpie falls into their life providing a welcome distraction, and ultimately bringing them closer together.

Penguin Bloom is based on the book of the same name by authors Cameron Bloom and Bradley Trevor Greive, and is based on actual events.

Director Glendyn Ivin has created what looks like an emotional powerhouse of a movie that is sure to get the waterworks going.

Naomi Watts and The Walking Dead’s Andrew Lincoln seem perfectly up to the task of playing a married couple faced with personal tragedy, and they’re supported by actors Rachel House, and Animal Kingdom’s (2010) Jacki Weaver.

While the film’s themes can be devastating to absorb, the silver lining comes in the form of the injured magpie that becomes a beacon of hope for the Bloom family.

Its arrival and subsequent affect on the family serves as an uplifting display of what can be achieved in unity, during times of duress.

Catch Penguin Bloom in Australian cinemas from 21 January 2021.
