Jared Leto joins team Marvel as the comics vampire Morbius in the upcoming movie of the same name from director Daniel Espinosa.
Leto plays Dr. Michael Morbius, a biochemist with a rare blood disease who’s determined to find a cure and help others from suffering the same fate.
He finds a promising, yet risky treatment that cures of his ailment, but the side-effects turn him into a superpowered vampire.
Morbius is based on the Marvel Comics vampire character who resides in the Spider-Man universe.
The film appears to be an origin story that charts Morbius’ journey from near-dead doctor to living-dead anti-hero.
The first trailer focuses on the film’s narrative so we don’t get to see much action, but we do get a good look at the character’s powers and some of the supporting characters played by Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson.
What was interesting was to see that the film is connected to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe with the reveal of Michael Keaton’s Vulture character from Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).
It seems now that Morbius, the two Spider-Man films and Venom (2018) are all based in the same universe.
This feels like a bonus for fans as it’s likely Sony and Marvel are planning a cross-over film at some stage in the future that will see Spider-Man, Venom, and Morbius all appear in a film together!
Spider-Man has always had some of the best villains in his rogues gallery and now we’re one step closer to getting a proper film rendition of those characters from Marvel Studios.
Morbius is directed by Daniel Espinosa and is due out in cinemas on 31 July 2020, check out the new trailer below!
