Anthony Mackie and Margaret Qualley star in this new Netflix Original sci-fi film as the last two survivors of the human race on a toxic planet Earth.
Mackie and Qualley play Micah and Sam, respectively; Sam a young scientist looking for ways to save a now toxic, non-liveable Earth, and Micah, looking to jump on board the last ship off the planet.
When their paths cross, Sam must figure out whether she wants to accompany Micah on the last shuttle off Earth and rejoin the rest of the human race on one of Jupiter’s moon’s, dubbed IO, or stay and keep up her goal of saving the planet.
Things look to take a turn for the worse when they discover that the last vessel’s launch station has changed location.
Considering there are essentially only two characters in the film, director Jonathan Helpert’s IO will likely be more of a character study, with themes of survival and sustainability set on the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic sci-fi background.
The film appears to have some stunning cinematography, and along with a thought-provoking story and some charismatic stars in the lead, it should prove popular for the streaming giant.
It also stars Danny Huston and is expected to drop on Netflix on 19 January 2019.
