Gunpowder Milkshake is an exciting new stylised action thriller featuring an all-female leading cast that includes Karen Gillan and Lena Headey.
After becoming estranged from her mother at a young age, Sam (Karen Gillan) unassumingly follows in her footsteps and becomes a hitwoman.
Her path eventually leads her back to her mother Scarlet (Lena Headey) and her assassin friends, as they join forces to stop a violent gang of criminals.
In the middle of it all is an innocent eight-year-old girl who Sam has sworn to protect.
While it’s becoming tiresome to compare every new stylised action movie to John Wick (2014), the comparison is evident in the trailer for Gunpowder Milkshake.
The film certainly looks entertaining despite not bringing anything new to the action movie genre.
Nevertheless, it features an outstanding female-centric cast that also includes Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett, and Carla Gugino.
The film looks like a fairly typical action romp that follows a badass protagonist taking on countless foes in stylistically violent ways and walking out unscathed.
It’s a generic formula, but it’s fun and works most of the time (see this year’s Nobody starring Bob Odenkirk as a prime example).
Gunpowder Milkshake is directed by Navot Papushado, who also directed the underrated and underseen 2013 thriller Big Bad Wolves.
It arrives in Australian cinemas from 15 July 2021 and in select theatres and on Netflix in the USA on the same day.
