Hugh Jackman plays a presidential candidate in Jason Reitman’s latest biographical dark comedy film The Front Runner, based on a true story.

Jackman plays the American Senator Gary Hart, whose presidential campaign is derailed in the midst of a sex scandal.

The film’s trailer paints a picture of a popular, charismatic and passionate candidate in Hart, whose extramarital affairs catch up to him after journalists begin nosing around.

Jackman appears to be in career-high form, and there is already whispers of Oscars-recognition for the actor.

It’s clear to see why that talk has started, with a full display of Jackman’s range featured in the trailer.

The film’s tone is also one that’s semi-dramatic, bordering on comedy.

One of those tragic-comedy types if you will, much like director Jason Reitman’s past films which include Tully (2018), Up in the Air (2009) and Thank You for Smoking (2005).

The film is based on the 2014 book ‘All the Truth Is Out: The Week Politics Went Tabloid’ by author Matt Bai.

Vera Farmiga, J. K. Simmons, Alfred Molina, Sara Paxton, Bill Burr and Kevin Pollak co-star.

The Front Runner releases on 17 January 2019.
