Actor/comedian Chris Rock executive produces and stars in the disturbing new horror film Spiral: From the Book of Saw, based on the famed Saw franchise.

Chris Rock plays a detective who’s tasked with solving a series of grisly murders that feel all-too-familiar.

The murders have the hallmarks of a psychotic serial killer, known as Jigsaw, who once plagued their city.

Under the tutelage of a police veteran (played by Samuel L. Jackson), detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his partner (Max Minghella) get caught up in a deadly game of survival.

The trailer introduces us to the film’s lead characters, giving us an insight into their personalities before veering off to outline the story.

In Spiral, Jigsaw (presumably, as he’s not specifically named), or a copycat killer of sorts is out hunting and killing police officers.

We only see quick snippets of some of the gruesome booby-traps that will feature in the film, of which fans of the Saw (2004-) series should be delighted with.

There’s even a specific callback to the first Saw film near the end of the trailer which is rather intriguing.

The Saw franchise kicked off in 2004, developed by Australia’s own James Wan and Leigh Wannell and went on to become an instant success, spawning another eight sequels, the most recent being 2017’s Jigsaw.

This horror film franchise is best known for its disturbing, gruesome violence and is adored by horror fans.

Rock’s involvement in this is unexpected but it’s also a welcome change and feels like a somewhat fresh direction for the franchise.

Samuel L. Jackson in a starring role is a nice touch as well.

Spiral is due out in cinemas on 14 May 2020.

Do people still love the Saw films or has the franchise’s day passed?
