Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani play a couple who find themselves having to solve a murder while being chased by the police and criminals in the new comedy, The Lovebirds.
While out driving, young lovers Jibran (Nanjiani) and Leilani (Rae) accidentally hit a cyclist and soon after, a stranger enters their car claiming to be a police officer and proceeds to run over the driver numerous times, killing them.
The couple decides to flee the scene while their ditzy friend reports the murder and gives the police a description of them.
Now on the run, Jibran and Leilani will attempt to solve the murder themselves instead of fronting up to the police in fear of being prosecuted.
The Lovebirds looks like a fairly typical new comedy film in the style of films like Game Night (2018) and Rough Night (2017), in that it features charismatic comedic leads that unsuspectingly get caught up in a whirlwind of trouble with a criminal element involved.
While there’s nothing new here, it still looks like it’ll be a bit of a hoot with the writing, performances and comedic timing all on point.
Here’s hoping there’s a lot more to this film that’s not shown in this trailer, and with films like these, there usually is.
Check out The Lovebirds in cinemas from 3 April 2020.
