The 1986 hit film Top Gun is getting a sequel just a short 33 years after the original hit cinemas, and now we have the official details.

Top Gun: Maverick, as it will be known, is scheduled for release on 12 July 2019, and if you didn’t pick up the clue in the title, we can confirm Tom Cruise will be reprising his role as Maverick.

Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer led the action-packed original film’s cast, with the film going on to become a hit amongst fans and forever being cemented in pop-culture history shortly thereafter.

Fans can expect more exhilarating action from the sequel. “We’re going to have big, fast machines. It’s going to be a competition film, like the first one … but a progression for Maverick.” Said Cruise of the sequel.

On board to direct is Joseph Kosinski, director of 2010’s TRON: Legacy and 2013’s Oblivion, which also starred Cruise in the lead role.

TRON was the director’s first feature film and unfortunately missed the mark, however his sci-fi follow-up Oblivion was a big improvement, even though it divided the critics.

In any case Kosinski has proven he has what it takes to tackle a big feature production, so as long as all the other pieces fall together in Maverick, then we should be in for an entertaining showing.

We’ll keep you posted as more information comes out on the film, and in the meantime let us know your thoughts on this news in the comments below.
