‘Pacific Rim Uprising’ Trailer Promises Epic Robot/Monster Action

The trailer for Pacific Rim Uprising has dropped, and it’s pretty much what you imagined it will be – more robot vs monster mayhem, for better or worse.

Jake Pentecost (John Boyega) leads a pack of young Jaeger pilots against a new Kaiju threat.

For the uninitiated, Jaegers are the gigantic symbiotic robots created by humans to battle enormous monsters known as Kaiju, who have surfaced to wreak havoc on the earth.

The plot appears to be essentially the same as Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 film Pacific Rim, albeit with a new lineup of monster-fighting warriors.

The first film was a lot of fun and definitely one that need not have been taken seriously, and if the trailer for its sequel is anything to go by, we can expect the same sort of tone in this new film.

While del Toro obviously had a big part to play in making the first film as enjoyable as it was, Uprising gets Steven S. DeKnight as its director, which is a bit concerning.

DeKnight’s past directing credits only include a handful of TV shows, so jumping into feature film direction may be a big ask for the director.

However one could argue that for a film like this, where the action and spectacle are the primary focus, does it really matter who directs it?

Probably not.

Pacific Rim Uprising stars John Boyega, Rinko Kikuchi, Scott Eastwood, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman.

It hits cinemas on 4 May 2018.
