It’s a Battle to Power Society in Trailer for ‘The Current War’

the current war trailer

Three visionaries go head-to-head to (literally) provide power to the nation in the trailer for The Current War, based on a true story.

We’re talking about Thomas Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch), the inventor of the lightbulb, whose DC technology is breaking new ground in providing electricity to the world, vs. George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon), alongside the genius inventor Nikolai Tesla (Nicholas Hoult), whose innovative AC technology for providing electricity set off a cutthroat competition to see which technology will prevail.

This is all new information to me and the film offers an intriguing look at what it took to make electrical power the norm that we take for granted today.

Produced by Martin Scorsese and featuring a powerhouse cast that also includes Tom Holland, The Current War will show viewers the behind-the-scenes story of this epic power struggle (it’s just too easy to use puns here).

The film has already screened across a handful of film festivals in the USA as far back as 2017 and holds a paltry 33% aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes (though no official consensus).

Considering the outstanding cast, it’s a shame that the early reception has been negative (some reviewers calling the film a bore).

Despite that, history buffs and fans of the actors involved in this film should go out and make up their own minds when the film gets a wider release on 4 October 2019.

It’s directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, whose past credits include Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) and the horror-slasher film The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014).
