Brie Larson stars as Captain Marvel and features in the trailer for the highly anticipated film of the same name from Marvel Studios.
Captain Marvel (Larson) drops out of the sky without any recollection of her human upbringing.
Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), in his pre-S.H.I.E.L.D. days (the film is set in the 90’s), takes her under his wing to help her discover her identity while setting out to thwart a much larger, cosmic threat.
The film’s first trailer introduces all of the above, setting the basic plot for the film.
Side characters are featured, and we get a brief glance at some of the film’s villainous-looking characters, but not much else.
Based on what is shown in the footage, however, the film looks like it will be a lot of fun.
Being set in the 90’s, Captain Marvel also appears to follow the particular action-style of films from that era, while infusing it with modern superhero-film elements – reminiscent of the style recently featured in Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018).
Brie Larson looks like a great fit for the role, and Sam Jackson reprises his role as Nick Fury for what feels like the umpteenth time.
Jackson plays a much younger version of himself with Marvel Studios’ use of their fancy de-aging technology.
The de-aging tech has gotten so accurate these days to the point of being scary, however, it only really works well in short doses.
Jackson appears to have quite a large role in this film, so it will be interesting to see how those effects hold up the more they appear on the screen throughout the film.
Also starring is Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Gemma Chan, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.
The film is directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who have worked together on films like Half Nelson (2006) and Mississipi Grind (2015).
Captain Marvel is due out in cinemas on 7 March 2019.
